This course introduces students to the Computer-Aided Transcription (CAT) process. It includes some history of CAT and some computer terminology. Students receive instruction in basic English text entry and nontechnical dictionary building. Students will be required to have an electronic stenotype machine or purchase a Prowriter attachment for their stenotype machine to create personal dictionaries of approximately 20,000 words. This CAT course includes scoping, editing, transcribing, spell checking, formatting, and printing a document. Students use the Prowriter attachment or electronic stenotype machine to continue preparing their personal dictionaries on a disk. This course may be taken for a maximum of 3 times. This advanced CAT course integrates taking verbatim proceedings with the Prowriter attachment or an electronic stenotype machine, sending the notes to the computer, then scoping, editing, printing, and electronically filing the final document. This course introduces students to the principles of realtime writing for computer-aided transcription (CAT). It provides a complete plan for analyzing personal writing techniques, developing a consistent writing style, and implementing a step-by-step plan to reinforce realtime writing using a current court reporting CAT software system. This course is for students proficient in computerized machine shorthand writing skills and who are interested in a stenographic computer-aided medical transcribing career. It provides a systematic approach toward building a basic personal medical dictionary. The dictionary entries include Latin and Greek prefixes, roots, suffixes and combining forms as well as medical terminology that will be created using a computer-aided transcription (CAT) software system.     Class hours: 2.0 Lecture/3.5 Laboratory Recommendation: CRCC 119B or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher. This course is for students proficient in computerized machine shorthand writing skills and who are interested in a career path in legal transcribing or court reporting. It provides a systematic approach toward building a basic legal computer-aided transcription (CAT) dictionary. Entries into the CAT dictionary include Latin and Greek prefixes, suffixes, roots, and combining forms of legal terminology used in various aspects of the legal system. This course may be taken for a maximum of 3 times. (Formerly BUSC 119F) Transfer Credit: CSU

    Class hours: 2.0 Lecture/2.6 Laboratory Recommendation: CRCC 9A and CRCC 9B, or CRCC 10A and CRCC 10B, CRCC 119B, CRCC 140C or equivalent with grades of Pass or "C" or higher. This course is designed for the student who wants to be a scopist for court reporters. It covers computer-aided transcription of a variety of judicial type proceedings utilizing specialized court reporting software. The student does not need to be a court reporting stenotype machine user but should already have completed a basic course in the software used to transcribe stenotype notes. This course may be taken a maximum of 2 times.

    Class hours: 2.0 Lecture/8.0 Laboratory Recommendation: CRCC 119C, CRCC 119D and CRCC 143 or equivalent with grades of Pass or "C" or higher. This course continues intensive sustained dictation to improve realtime writing and computer transcription ability. Latin and French words, Congressional Record, multiple-voice testimony, legal opinions, and expert opinion materials in realtime are included. This course may be taken for a maximum of 2 times. (Formerly BUSC 125) Transfer Credit: CSU
