    Class hours: 3.0 Independent Study A course to provide opportunity for individual research and field projects under the direction of a faculty member in a given department. With the guidance of the faculty member, students prepare and carry out a written learning agreement describing the purposes and outcomes of the project. Students should expect to meet with the supervising faculty member one to two hours each week for conferences. Credit is based upon the number of hours in the semester expected to complete the project (1 unit for 54 hours, 2 units for 108 hours). This course may be taken a maximum of 2 times. For selected disciplines, UC transfer credit may be possible after admission to a UC campus, pending review of appropriate course materials by UC staff. See a counselor for an explanation.     Class hours: 3.0 Lecture This course surveys the field of special education emphasizing the role of the Special Education Assistant in the training of the exceptional individuals. It includes an introduction to the types of special need children and adults, the function of the assistant, and the vocational opportunities available.

    Class hours: 3.0 Lecture This course is a comprehensive overview of early childhood inclusion as it applies to children from birth to age eight. It offers a broad study of early childhood special education as it relates to inclusion. The course will cover federal and state laws and regulations, terminology and definitions, appropriate practices and interventions, behavioral issues, family support and guidance and "whole child/whole family" approach to inclusion success.

    Class hours: One (1) hour control class each week plus 15 hours of employment per week for Special Education Assistant work experience 73 or 20 hours of employment per week for Special Education Assistant work experience 74. The employment must be in a job related to the student's educational goal. Corequisite: Enrollment in the Special Education Assistant vocational program with 7 or more units including occupational work experience. Occupational Work Experience is a supervised employment program in an approved work station related to the student's declared major. Students meet with their instructor for a minimum of one hour per week and will receive credit for on-the-job learning experiences that are new or are an expansion of their regular responsibilities. This course may be taken a maximum of 4 times based on the number of hours on the job. This course meets the Department of Social Services Classification Indicator DS 3.

    Class hours: 1.0 Lecture This course is designed to help the student approach career decisions in a systematic way. A variety of techniques are used to assess individual characteristics and relate these to occupational information. At times, sections may be offered which emphasize particular types of situations such as the person making initial career decisions, mid-life career changes, and minority programs.

    Class hours: 3.0 Lecture Recommendation: Satisfactory completion of the English Placement Process or ENGL 52 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher and participation in a college or community-based organization or club. This course is designed for students who wish to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the theories, principles, and techniques of leadership in a college or community-based organization. It includes the study and practical application of group and individual leadership techniques. It is designed to improve awareness of group dynamics, listening skills, personal values, decision making, problem solving, and organizational development. It emphasizes critical analysis of leaders in the news, history, film, and/or literature. Transfer Credit: CSU

    Class hours: 2.0 Lecture/3.3 Laboratory This course is designed to aid the student in identifying and evaluating individual, educational, and vocational ability. Self-awareness techniques will be used to enhance this assessment process. This class is designed primarily for the EOPS summer students, but is open to all interested students. Field work experience will assist the student to develop skills that enhance his/her work performance. (Ten hours field work for those employed as work study or equivalent volunteer experience as approved by instructor. This course may be taken for a maximum of 2 times.
