    Class hours: 3.0 Lecture Prerequisite: CD 110, CDEC 111, CDEC 112, and CDEC 113 or equivalent with grades of Pass or "C" or higher. This course is a study of the methods and principles of supervising student teachers, assistant teachers, parents and volunteers in early childhood education/child development classrooms. Emphasis is on the role of the classroom teachers who function as mentors to new teachers while simultaneously addressing the needs of children, parents, and other staff. This course meets the requirement for a course in adult supervision for the California Child Development Permit. Transfer Credit: CSU

    Class hours: 3.0 Independent Study A course to provide opportunity for individual research and field projects under the direction of a faculty member in a given department. With the guidance of the faculty member, students prepare and carry out a written learning agreement describing the purposes and outcomes of the project. Students should expect to meet with the supervising faculty member one to two hours each week for conferences. Credit is based upon the number of hours in the semester expected to complete the project (1 unit for 54 hours, 2 units for 108 hours). This course may be taken a maximum of 2 times. For selected disciplines, UC transfer credit may be possible after admission to a UC campus, pending review of appropriate course materials by UC staff. See a counselor for an explanation. The major focus will be on documenting and assessing the learning and thinking process of children and how it develops through exploration, discovery, and the creation of images, using a variety of art materials. This course meets the Department of Social Services Classification Indicator DS3.

    Class hours: 3.0 Lecture Prerequisite: CDEC 112 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher. This course will acquaint the student with developmentally appropriate language, literature, social sciences, and dramatic activities for children. Instruction will cover pre-reading, pre-writing, and the development of listening and speaking skills. Special needs and diversity issues involved in the development of literacy skills are introduced. This course meets the Department of Social Services Classification Indicator DS3.

    Class hours: 3.0 Lecture Prerequisite: CDEC 112 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher. This course focuses on principles and methods of providing creative musical and movement experiences for children. The student will also have the opportunity to learn how to use simple musical instruments suitable for use in Early Childhood Education programs. This course meets the Department of Social Services Classification Indicator DS 3.

    Class hours: 3.0 Lecture Prerequisite: CD 110, CDEC 111, CDEC 112, and CDEC 113 or equivalent with grades of Pass or "C" or higher. This course will acquaint the student with the role of the director/supervisor in a child care program. Content includes laws governing child care in California, admission procedures, recordkeeping, budget, finance, the physical plant, and staffing concerns. This course meets the Department of Social Services Classification Indicator DS 6.

    Class hours: 3.0 Lecture Prerequisite: CDEC 66 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher. Recommendation: Teaching experience This course offers advanced information for administrators or directors in the child care professions. The student will explore legislative updates, current issues, families at risk, professionalism, Child Development Associates, National Association for the Education of Young Children Accreditation, and marketing strategies. This course meets the Department of Social Services Classification Indicator DS 6.

    Class hours: 3.0 Lecture This course is designed for a person interested in or already managing a child care business in the home. Licensing procedures, appropriate standards, recruitment of children, cultural issues, provision and maintenance of a safe and stimulating environment, nutrition programs, community resources, record keeping and other business aspects are covered. Emphasis is on nurturing children, working cooperatively with parents, and the importance of a good self-concept for the child and the family child care provider.

    Class hours: One (1) hours control class each week plus 15 hours of employment per week for Instructional Aide work experience 73 or 20 hours of employment per week for Instructional Aide work experience 74. The employment must be in a job related to the student's educational goal. Corequisite: Enrollment in the Instructional Aide vocational program with 7 or more units including occupational work experience. Occupational Work Experience is a supervised employment program in an approved workstation related to the student's declared major. Students meet with their instructor for a minimum of one hour per week and will receive credit for on-the-job learning experiences that are new or are an expansion of their regular responsibilities. Students who are not employed but wish to gain work experience may be placed in a non-paying position if such opportunities are available. These courses may be taken for a maximum of 2 times based on the number of hours on the job.
