    Class hours: 6.0 Independent Study A course to provide opportunity for individual research and field projects under the direction of a faculty member in a given department. With the guidance of the faculty member, students prepare and carry out a written learning agreement describing the purposes and outcomes of the project. Students should expect to meet with the supervising faculty member one to two hours each week for conferences. Credit is based upon the number of hours in the semester expected to complete the project (1 unit for 54 hours, 2 units for 108 hours).     Class hours: 3.0 Lecture This is a course for anyone who deals with children: parents, teachers, and professionals in human services. Topics discussed are the influences on children's growth and development by the family, the school, child-care facilities, the peer group, the mass media, and the community. Also examined are how these forces interact to socialize and produce the child's values, morals, attitudes, behavior, and self-esteem. This course will acquaint the student with developmentally appropriate mathematics and science activities for pre-kindergarten children. Activities for this age group in counting, sets, earth and life sciences, classification of objects, and cooking experiences will be presented.     Class hours: 3.0 Lecture This course offers an opportunity to study the attitudes and habits essential for the general physical health, mental health, and safety of teacher, parent, and child. Topics covered are the following: nutrition; school menus; common childhood diseases; federal, state, and local nutrition and safety regulations; and other special health problems of Early Childhood Education Programs. Instruction includes health-protection resources provided by home, school, and community. This course meets the Department of Social Services Classification Indicator DS 7.     Class hours: 2.0 Lecture/3.0 Laboratory Prerequisite: CDEC 111 and CDEC 112 or equivalent with grades of Pass or "C" or higher. This course is designed to provide an opportunity for students placed in the Cerritos College Child Development Center and off-site practica to explore the relationship between theory and practice in programs for young children. The course includes both lecture and laboratory experiences during which students will examine developmental issues, the role of the teacher/caregiver in early childhood programs, and the relationship between programs and families. Students will explore and practice techniques for the observation and recording of behavior; examine environments for young children; and plan, implement, and evaluate developmentally appropriate, culturally relevant experiences for young children. Students spend 3 hours/week in placement for a total of 51 hours/semester. TB clearance and good health are required to participate in this course.     Class hours: One (1) hour control class each week plus 15 hours of employment per week for Early Childhood Education work experience 173 or 20 hours of employment per week for Early Childhood Education work experience 174. The employment must be in a job related to the student's educational goal. Corequisite: Enrollment in Child Development vocational program of 7 or more units in major including Occupational Work Experience. Occupational Work Experience is a supervised employment program in an approved work station related to the student's declared major. Students meet with their instructor for a minimum of one hour per week and will receive credit for on-the-job learning experience that are new or are an expansion of their regular responsibilities. This course may be taken a maximum of 4 times based on the number of hours on the job. This course meets the Department of Social Services Classification Indicator DS 3. Transfer Credit: CSU
