Microsoft Publisher will be used to create camera-ready printed presentation materials. The course will cover the fundamentals required to develop presentation materials such as business forms, letterhead, business logos, advertisements, organization charts, mail-order catalogs, three-fold brochures, and newsletters. This course is intended for the business professional not the graphic artist.     Class hours: 3.0 Lecture/2.0 Laboratory Prerequisite: BCOT 114 or BCOT 112, BCOT 113, and BCOT 96, with grades of Pass or "C" or higher. Recommendation: Concurrent enrollment in BCOT 3T. This course is a realistic business office simulation designed to help students reinforce and build software skills, improve Internet skills, and develop teamwork and critical thinking skills. Through simulation, students will work as an administrative assistant in the operation of a small business as they work through various departments for the owner of a company. Projects assigned contain numerous related jobs of varying difficulty. Each job begins with a list of software skills that students will apply. Some jobs are further divided into related tasks. General information and step-by-step directions are provided for completing jobs. Students will work from source documents provided in the text and use data files to complete jobs.     Class hours: 2.0 Lecture/1.0 Laboratory Recommendation: Computer keyboard skills and ability to type 25 wpm. Concurrent enrollment in BCOT 3T. This course provides a review for those students who have had previous keyboarding and document processing experience. Touch control of the keyboard and proper typing techniques; keyboarding speed and accuracy; and the application of basic word processing computer skills in the formatting of reports, letters, memos, tables, e-mail correspondence, and other types of either a traditional or in an online learning environment. This course will emphasize the planning, organizing, problem solving, and human relation skills needed by secretaries at the administrative level. Employed or re-entry office support personnel may use this class for a refresher course or for professional purposes.     Class hours: 1.0 Lecture/0.5 Laboratory Recommendation: Concurrent enrollment in BCOT 3T. This is a computerized filing course that covers the principles of information processing, storage, and retrieval. Instruction is given in the rules of indexing and alphabetizing. A study will be made of geographic, numeric, subject, microfilming, and magnetic tape storage systems. Practice will be given in the processing of materials, filing, indexing, alphabetizing, coding, creating filenames and filename extensions for electronic files, and storing and retrieving electronic data to and from directories and subdirectories.     Class hours: 3.0 Lecture Recommendation: Concurrent enrollment in BCOT 3T. This course is designed to teach and reinforce accurate spelling, vocabulary, word usage, and proofreading skills with a distinct business orientation. It emphasizes the business context of these basic communications skills, which are needed for integration into other courses such as typewriting, machine transcription, shorthand, office procedures, and court reporting. This course meets 54 hours of the English requirement for Court Reporting Certification. Transfer Credit: CSU

    Class hours: 4.0 Lecture/2.0 Laboratory Prerequisite: BCOT 131 or BCOT 132, or BCOT 162 and BCOM 46, or equivalent courses with grades of Pass or "C" or higher. Recommendation: Concurrent enrollment in BCOT 3T. This is a course designed to teach the skills and knowledge necessary for the production of high-quality business documents through the total transcription concept (from handwritten copy, from machine dictation, or from shorthand dictation) and for the development of proper machine dictation skills/procedures. The emphasis is on the development of language arts skills, skillful keyboarding, and accurate proofreading in producing quality finished documents on electronic equipment/microcomputers.     Class hours: 1 hour/week coordination class. Corequisite: Enrollment in 7 or more units, including Business Computerized Office Technologies Occupational Work Experience, in a declared business major. Three units of Business Computerized Office Technologies Occupational Work Experience require 180 non-paid hours of work or 225 paid hours of work per semester. Four units of Business Computerized Office Technologies Occupational Work Experience require 240 non-paid hours of work or 300 paid hours of work per semester. Work Experience/Career Internship provides the opportunity for students to apply skills and knowledge learned in the classroom to related experiences on the job/training site. The aim of the course is to assist students in expanding specific job skills. In the process of doing so, it creates greater communication with increased understanding between the student/workers, the college, and the employer/trainers. First semester students meet with their instructors for a minimum of one hour per week. Students also pursue a program of self-evaluation to determine individual job weaknesses and strengths. Semester projects that relate to their major and job skills must be completed on the job/training site. Second, third, and fourth semester students must secure departmental approval before enrolling. Students will meet weekly with the instructor until their participatory assignments and semester work projects have been approved. These courses may be taken for a maximum of 4 times.
