This course focuses on normal verbal and non-verbal communication across the life span, including an understanding of how the different areas of language contribute to the total communication process. Students will learn what distinctive features constitute normal speech, language and hearing in a multicultural society. Observation techniques, assessment and intervention tools will be introduced. Class hours: 3.0 Laboratory Prerequisite: SLP 100 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher. Corequisite: SPCH 271. This is a skills lab designed to provide the student with practice in phonetic transcription skills. Students will transcribe normal and disordered speech using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) for broad transcription. Linguistic variations and regional dialects will be addressed. This course may be taken for a maximum of 3 times. Transfer Credit: CSU

Class hours: 4.0 Lecture/3.0 Laboratory Prerequisite: SLP 100 and SLP 110 or equivalent with grades of Pass or "C" or higher. Recommendation: A & P 120 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher. This course focuses on screening procedures and treatment interventions used for speech, language and hearing disorders in children in educational and healthcare settings. The student will learn to use observational checklists, administer screening assessment tests and complete related therapeutic protocol forms. Transfer Credit: CSU

Class hours: 1.5 Lecture/0.5 Laboratory Prerequisite: Completion of SLP 100 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher. This course introduces the student to the needs of non-oral children and adults, as well as the preparation, use and maintenance of selected adaptive communication equipment. Emphasis is placed on the collaborative use of assistive equipment for speech, language and hearing disorders. Transfer Credit: CSU

This course is an introduction to the different clinical settings in which the speech-language pathology assistant may work. A multicultural approach is used throughout in the analysis of human relationships through a study of major concepts. Institutions and their functions, personality development, social interaction, social change, collective behavior, the environment, war and peace are major themes for this course.
