Students make actual broadcasts and recordings and are responsible for staffing and some programming of the campus radio station WPMD-956, 1700 AM, and WPMD on the internet.     Class hours: 0.5 Lecture/1.0 Laboratory Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment or completion JOUR 101 with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher. Recommendation: Concurrent enrollment or completion of JOUR 103 or RTV 152 with a grade of Credit or "C" or higher. This course focuses on broadcast newswriting and production techniques using the college radio station, WPMD, as a practical laboratory. Students will develop and research story ideas for regular news broadcasts on WPMD. Newsgathering and reporting for broadcast will be emphasized, along with ethics and legal aspects of communication. This course is not open to students currently enrolled in or who have completed JOUR 170. This course may be taken a maximum of 4 times. Transfer Credit: CSU

    Class hours: 1 lecture Corequisite: Enrollment in 7 or more units in a declared Broadcast Media Major. One unit of Occupational Work Experience in Theatre require 60 non-paid hours or 75 paid hours of work per semester. Work Experience/Career Internship provides the opportunity for students to apply skills and knowledge learned in the classroom to related experience on the job/training site. The aim of the course is to assist students in expanding specific job skills. This creates greater communication with increased understanding between the students/workers, the college, and the employer/trainers. In the first semester, students will meet with the instructor for a minimum of one hour per week. Students also pursue a program of self-evaluation to determine individual job weaknesses and strengths. This course may be taken a maximum of 4 times. Transfer Credit: CSU

    Class hours: 2.0 Lecture/3.0 Laboratory Prerequisite: RTV 155 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher. This course is a study and practice of digital audio production in radio broadcasting centered around the computer. This focus is on digital manipulation of sounds using current professional grade software. Students will make actual broadcasts, podcasts, and .wav files on a digital medium that will result in an audio portfolio. This course may be taken a maximum of 4 times. Transfer Credit: CSU

    Class hours: 3.0 Independent Study A course to provide opportunity for individual research and field projects under the direction of a faculty member in a given department. With the guidance of the faculty member, students prepare and carry out a written learning agreement describing the purposes and outcomes of the project. Students should expect to meet with the supervising faculty member one to two hours each week for conferences. Credit is based upon the number of hours in the semester expected to complete the project (1 unit for 54 hours, 2 units for 108 hours). This course may be taken a maximum of 2 times. For selected disciplines, UC transfer credit may be possible after admission to a UC campus, pending review of appropriate course materials by UC staff. See a counselor for an explanation. This course introduces the student to the operations of the IBM iSeries 400 Computer System using the OS/400 operating systems. The course includes the following topics: navigating around the system, command structure, message handling, Operation Navigator, trouble shooting, system security, job scheduling, backup/restore, work management, library management, object management, control management, and control language programming.     Class hours: 3.0 Lecture/1.0 Laboratory Prerequisite: SL 101 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher. This course is a continuation of the study of the basic principles of American Sign Language with an emphasis on conceptual accuracy. A deeper appreciation of deaf culture is developed by studying the deaf community, encouraging participation in deaf community events, and understanding various communication technology used by deaf people.     Class hours: 3.0 Lecture/1.0 Laboratory Prerequisite: SL 102 or equivalent with grade of Pass or "C" or higher. This course provides a review and in-depth study of the grammatical concepts of American Sign Language. It will further develop the appreciation of cultural diversity particularly in the deaf community. The class is conducted primarily in American Sign Language. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC
