    Class hours: 1.0 Lecture/2.0 Laboratory Prerequisite: Audition This class provides each individual student the opportunity to learn and execute the principles of string ensemble playing that only intimate chamber music can provide. Among the topics covered will be musical styles, phrasing, balance and blending techniques, intonation, rehearsal techniques, and performance experience.     Class hours: 2.0 Lecture/2.0 Laboratory This choral ensemble is designed for the student who has little or no previous vocal experience. Emphasis will be placed on the development of individual musicianship through the study of musical styles, vocal concepts and repertoire. A variety of traditional choral music ranging from renaissance to the twentieth century will be studied and performed. Required participation in concerts may include both on-campus and off-campus events. This course may be taken for a maximum of 4 times. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC

    Class hours: 2.0 Lecture/2.0 Laboratory Prerequisite: Audition This course is designed for the student who has had some previous vocal experience. Emphasis will be placed on the development of individual musicianship through the study of musical styles, vocal concepts, and repertoire. A variety of traditional choral music ranging from the Renaissance to the twentieth century and beyond will be studied and performed with a particular emphasis on major choral works. Required participation in concerts may include both on-campus and off-campus events. This course may be taken a maximum of 4 times. Transfer Credit: CSU, UC

A variety of gospel styles ranging from traditional to contemporary will be studied and performed. Required participation in concerts may include both on-campus and off-campus events. A wide variety of music ranging from Broadway musicals to pop and jazz charts will be studied. Required participation in concerts may include both on-campus and off-campus events.     Class hours: 1.0 Lecture/2.0 Laboratory Recommendation: Audition. This course in basic techniques in improvisation begins with simple question-and-answer phrases and progresses to extended solos. It covers detailed and applied knowledge of chord progressions and stresses harmonic forms employed in all phases of jazz. Emphasis will be on the blues, 32-bar standards, and jazz pieces. Included are performance, analysis, listening, written improvisations, playing with records, and transcribed solo study. This course may be taken for a maximum of 4 times. Transfer Credit: CSU; UC

    Class hours: 3.0 Lecture Prerequisite: Audition This course focuses on the study of jazz and popular singing styles with emphasis on historical elements, stylistic concepts, theoretical practices, performance procedures, and its function within the music industry. Topics include harmony and ear training for jazz and popular singers, historical analysis of significant singers of this genre, small vocal group jazz ensemble, studio recording courses unless otherwise noted. techniques, improvisation, solo stylization, ensemble sound concepts, and the study of popular literature. This course may be taken for a maximum of 4 times. Transfer Credit: CSU

    Class hours: 2.0 Lecture/2.0 Laboratory This class is an introduction to MIDI, synthesizer programming, sampling, computer sequencing, drum machine technique, and computer composition. Also, the course introduces the basics of acoustics and the physical properties of sound. Compositions will be required of all students. Individual studio time is provided. This course may be taken for a maximum of 2 times. Transfer Credit: CSU

    Class hours: 1.0 Lecture/6.0 Laboratory Prerequisite: MUS 144 or equivalent with a grade of Pass or "C" or higher. This course is a continuation of tape studio practices, digital recording, synthesizer performance, and computer based recording and processing. This course may be taken for a maximum of 2 times.
