The concepts of culture, values, diversity, perspectives, conflict, interdependence, and change are central to the course and are used to analyze such issues as peace and conflict, world hunger, population, human rights, and economic in-terdependence. This course seeks to understand global issues, how others view these issues, and the effects these issues have on the world. This course requires at least one paper using a documentation format. It discusses the interplay of various peoples and cultures, and the powerful Islamic empires of the Caliphs, Seljuks, and Ottomans. Special emphasis is given to the impact of European and American political and economic imperialism, the spread of Arab nationalism and Islamic fundamentalism, and the region's current strategic position in global affairs. Emphasis will be on Africa's place in world history since 1500, with special attention paid to the legacy of colonialism, the interaction of Africans and the outside world, and the challenges faced by Africans since independence in the 1950s and 1960s. It is a gentle ?range of motion workout.? There are chair exercises and standing exercises.
