2.00 Credits
This course is required for all students who enroll in two or more PCL classes. Study Skills are specific strategies and techniques that improve a student's likelihood of success in college. This class teaches time management, motivation, goal setting and learning styles, as well as strategies for diffusing core beliefs that limit student success. This class helps students learn how to learn. Study Skills begins in the sixth week of the semester, following ORT 1201 Success Seminar. Pre-requisite: ORT 1201 Success Seminar.

Beginning in Fall 08, students who enroll at NPCC with an ACT Reading score of 12-14 or COMPASS scores of 51-64 must take Reading Improvement I. This course deals with reading comprehension, vocabulary, and reading rate. This is a highly individualized course structured around the needs of each student. Offered in a laboratory setting. Students must have a score of 11.0 in comprehension to exit the course. Pre-requisite: An ACT of 12 or better or a COMPASS score of 51 within the three years preceding enrollment. Students who cannot meet the pre-requisite scores will be required to take a reading tutorial through Adult Basic Education prior to enrolling in Reading Improvement I. Fall, Spring, Summer.

Beginning in Fall 08, students who enroll at NPCC with an ACT Reading score of 15-18 or COMPASS scores of 65-80 will take Reading Improvement II. In addition this course is required for all students who do not earn an 11.0 in comprehension in Reading Improvement I (PCLC 0023). Like Reading Improvement I, this is a highly individualized course structured around the needs of each student. Offered in a laboratory setting. Students must have a score of 11.0 in comprehension to exit the course. Pre-requisite: An ACT of 15 or better or a COMPASS score of 65 within the three years preceding enrollment. Fall, Spring, Summer.

This course is a study of writing strategies for essays. Students will learn sentence combining through coordination, subordination, and parallel structure. Basic essay format and various methods of essay development are studied in preparation for Composition I. Students must earn an 11.0 in Language on the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) to successfully complete the class. Pre-requisite: Appropriate ACT or COMPASS scores. Fall, Spring, Summer.

This class will review basic arithmetic skills as well as prepare for entry into algebra classes. Topics in Module One include whole numbers, fractions, decimals; Module Two addresses basic algebra, ratio and proportion, and percent; finally, Module Three includes signed numbers, measurement and units, and basic geometry. Students are placed into Modules One, Two, or Three by the COMPASS diagnostics administered in the Testing Center. Successful completion of Pre- Algebra through Module Three with a "C" or better is required to progress to the Beginning Algebra (PLCM 0074) Modules. Pre-requisite: An ACT score of 11 - 17 or a COMPASS score of 17 - 47 in Pre-Algebra within the preceding three years. Diagnostics are required for enrolling in Pre-Algebra. Fall, Spring, Summer.

Topics in Module One include properties of real numbers, equations, and evaluating formulas; Module Two covers polynomials and introduces fractions; Modules Three includes factoring and graphing. Students are placed into Modules One, Two, or Three by the COMPASS diagnostics administered in the Testing Center. Successful completion of Beginning Algebra through Module Three with a "C" or better is required to progress to Intermediate Algebra (MATH 1003). Pre-requisites: A "C" or better in Pre- Algebra, or an ACT score of 18, or a COMPASS score of 54 in Pre-Algebra/0 - 35 in Algebra within the preceding three years. Diagnostics are required for enrolling in Beginning Algebra. Fall, Spring, Summer.

This course is designed to provide a sound basic understanding of the history, rules, etiquette, and safety aspects of the sport of fencing. Will demonstrate basic technical and tactical skills needed for novice level competition through emphasis on basic offense and defense, continuation of attack, compound attacks, and practical bouting.

For those who wish to master the fundamentals of Hatha Yoga. Emphasis is given to the synchronization of breath and movement and to the understanding of the basic yoga postures. Taught in Vinyasa style (flowing from one posture to the next, inspired by breath) together with some held postures.

Emphasizes history, principles, relationship of physical education to general education, professional literature and vocational opportunities. Designed for physical education majors but open to any student. Spring.

Nautilus Conditioning is an individual physical training course designed to enhance one's physical and mental state. This course is designed with four levels of conditioning for muscle groups. Credit may not be earned more than once for each level. All participants must be registered, attend an orientation session and demonstrate an understanding of the physical education principles. All students must follow guidelines for Use of Nautilus Conditioning Equipment and must sign a Voluntary Assumption of Risk form. Student enrollment limited. Students must provide their own towels and lock for lockers. May be repeated once. Fall, Spring. Lab Fee.
