BIOL 230: Oceanarium II

Students gain first-hand experience working in the MSUM Oceanarium located in the basement of the Langseth Building. Multi-semester courses are encouraged to acquire greater mastery of these skills, opportunities for student-student mentorship and development of leadership potential. This course is the second in a series of three courses, taught concurrently, that allow students to incrementally acquire skills in preparing food and feeding animals, maintaining holding facilities (BIOL 130 Aquarist level I), service filters and pumps, help lead tours (BIOL 230 Aquarist level II), and make sea water, water changes, monitor water quality, and help develop and deliver new curricula and displays, lead tour guides and act as ambassadors for the Oceanarium (BIOL 330 Aquarist level III). This course connects human activities to the conservation of marine ecosystems, and the role of the oceanarium facility in educating the general public about this connection. Level III Aquarist (BIOL 330) is required for completion of the Marine Aquarist Certificate.
