The primary objective of this course is to explore the reasons for the emergence of the international legal order as a crucial constraint on the freedom of action of national governments; that is, to understand the impact of the international legal order on contemporary international relations. It also seeks to introduce the substance of international law in selected issue-areas, and to provide an overview of the nature of international legal reasoning.
