Overview of the broad topics within the industrial hygiene and waste management fields. Students will have the opportunity to apply classroom information to real-world industrial situations during the laboratory component of the course. Field trips to local industrial locations, controlled industrial hygiene sampling activities, environmental sampling and other field activities will provide students with practical experience with a variety of industrial hygiene and hazardous materials equipment. This is a lecture/laboratory course designed to introduce the student to general safety principles that concern industry and the public sector. Key topics will cover accident causation, fire safety, electrical safety, mechanical safety, institutional safety, recreational safety, and home safety. Areas to be covered include the soils, water and wastewater systems, food sanitation, vector control, air quality, solid waste management, communicable disease control, environmental laboratory techniques and environmental assessment. Multi-media presentations, hands-on activities, lectures and guest speakers will provide students with a broad base of environmental health concepts for later use in their careers. Basic philosophy of accident prevention, accident causes and their analysis, the selection and application of remediation, methods used to create and maintain interest in accident prevention, and an examination of the basic psychology of and the education for accident prevention. Discussions of the overall purpose of the regulation, its effect on public health, and the impact of the regulation will follow a brief history of each regulation. Basic principles and concepts of modern shelter programs. Emphasis on planning and community practices essential to healthful housing. Building, zoning, and housing codes are reviewed with examination of plumbing, heating, ventilation, electricity, lighting, sewage disposal and water supply, nuisance control, and specialized shelter problems. Includes map and property descriptions, subdivision control, mobile home parks, campgrounds, and environmental action required in time of emergency. Requires: EHSM 201 Typically Offered Fall Only

An in-depth examination of the current practices in water supply and wastewater treatment and disposal programs, food programs and integrated pest management programs in local public health.
