An overview of the changing quality requirements in the printing industry, and the resulting quality improvement methods now being introduced. The fundamental concepts and tools of statistical process control (SPC) will be reviewed, as well as terms, definitions, trends and some of the control targets and measurement instruments common to the printing industry. This course is designed to introduce students to emerging technologies in digital and variable data printing. The impact of these technologies on traditional print markets and new digital printing markets are explored. Students examine specific digital printing technologies including: color toner based print engines, ink jet, and direct to press offset presses. Students complete projects utilizing databases and variable data printing software, servers and presses to produce unique customized variable data print campaigns. Provide students an opportunity to become conversant with the terminology and theory, and practical applications of both conventional and ICC compliant approaches to managing color in printing, publishing and alternative digital media. The importance of achieving consistent tone reproduction and gray balance is emphasized as well as the essentials of color measurement and process control. Students are introduced to ICC color management, including laboratory creation, testing, and application of ICC compliant profiles. Pre- Requisites: Senior Status. Typically Offered Spring Only

Lecture/lab class is a capstone course for the New Media prepress emphasis. Students will conceptualize and carry out a digital imaging project from start to finish (with a print and nonprint application). Students will bring together various skills and processes learned in the curriculum. Weekly project reporting and documentation are required. Pre-Requisites: NMPP 375, Senior Status.
