Designed to develop knowledge and ability to design various types of stamping dies. Product designs are evaluated to determine type of die design, press selection, press accessories and feeding mechanisms as they relate to stamping die design. All facets of safety standards and safety equipment as demanded by state and federal standards are evaluated. Possible dies evaluated include: blanking, forming, drawing, progressive, cam operated, trimming and piercing dies. All varieties of standard and special components will be incorporated into assignments. Computer aided design, as pertaining to die design, will be investigated. Technical parts and assemblies may pass through many different operations during manufacture. Formal means of managing, analyzing and specifying process dimensions and tolerances are essential to the design of capable manufacturing processes. Tolerance Charting is a structured engineering tool that can be used to determine process dimensions and tolerances in light of product drawing tolerances and process tolerance stacks. This course teaches the Manufacturing Engineering Technology student the Tolerance Charting Method of process tolerance analysis. Pre- Requisites: MFGE 311 or Departmental approval. This is a basic course that covers the fundamentals and use of statistics as they apply to controlling manufacturing quality in industry. Other statistical methods including simple linear regression, measurement systems analysis, simple 2 level factorial experimental designs, and cause and effect diagrams will be covered as well. This course is designed to familiarize the manufacturing student with the concepts and practices of lean manufacturing as currently applied in industry, and develop in them rudimentary skill in applying those principles, with the overall goal of enabling them to reduce waste in the workplace. Topics include push vs. pull systems, kanban, continuous flow production, takt time, SMED, TPM, TQM, TOC, 5S, poka yoke, and kaizen. Plant tours (if available) will help illustrate applications of concepts. Pre-Requisites: Junior Status. Typically Offered Fall, Spring, Summer
