It is designed to introduce majors to the methods of historical research and various analytical approaches used to interpret historical data. Students will apply content knowledge they have acquired from their completed major course work. Students undertake a major research project, requiring them to execute primary and secondary research; as well as preparing a portfolio of the various drafts and final paper. Students will develop first hand skills in developing, presenting, and evaluating instructional activities in various fields of history. Throughout the semester, students will develop content modules focusing on a specific event or issue in United States or World history. These modules will be presented in practice teaching sessions and accompanying assessment tools will be developed to evaluate the instructor and materials used. This course exposes students to key issues, events and personalities associated with Jim Crow segregation from 1870 to 1965. Using six thematic modules, student study the social and political function of segregation as well as resistance to Jim Crow laws and social customs. Students analyze events and personalities who either supported or opposed Jim Crow segregation. Students write essays on issues raised within each thematic module as well as develop a portfolio final. Requires: ENGL 321 & PLSC 121 & HIST 121 & HIST 122. Typically Offered Summer Only

Students explore a wide range of social and political issues that prompted major legal or legislative battles. Students draw from specific case studies as they develop and apply their skills at critically examining issues, tracing their origins, analyzing competing perspectives and assessing both short-term and long-term outcomes.     College: University College Department: Developmental Progs- Curr Credit Hours: 1 Orientation to Honors is a one credit class required of all first semester freshmen in the honors Program. The course will serve as an intro to the honors community. Honors upperclassmen will serve as peer mentors to the freshmen cohort. Community service, cultural events, leadership and RSO requirements will be explained and investigated.
