Introduction to the essential physiological, psychological and social effects of chemical dependence taught from a general systems perspective. Basic psychopharmacology of both addictive and psychotherapeutic drugs will be included.

This second course in a series of three presumes a basic understanding of the various drugs of addiction. It is a reflective exploration of the personal and social meaning of addiction and a critical appraisal of the theories developed to explain it. An important diagnostic component is included in the course.

This third course in a series of three graduate courses concerned with addictions. This one focuses on recovery, with particular emphasis on treatment methods, relapse prevention, community resources, and special populations. A laboratory component is included.

An overview of chemical dependence with special emphasis on youth. Physiological, psychological, medical, and social aspects of abuse and addiction. Discussion of children of alcoholics, impact on the family, and assessment and treatment with applications for school, community, and legal professions.
