Oceanic, African, Native American Art is designed as an introduction to Non-Western art, art history & issues in the visual culture of those small-scale societies. Both trad. & modern concerns of visual culture will be explored. Emphasis is placed on approaches to the study of non- western art, the indentification of works, styles, artists & the broad context in which each piece was conceived & executed.

Focuses on ancient and medieval art created in and around the Mediterranean Basin and Western Europe, from its begin- nings in the Stone Age. Explores how art helps form a culture, reflecting and constructing the meaning of life for participants in the work of art. Includes analysis of artistic styles, especially in painting, sculpture and arch- itecture, and studies ceremonial and utilitarian objects in the form of metalwork, mosaic and ceramic.

Introduces students to the breadth and depth of artistic achievement in Western Europe and the United States from the beginning of the Renaissance in Italy to contemporary post- modern work in a global context. Juxtaposes the history of painting, sculpture and architecture and the decorative art and historical, religious, political, economic and social events, emphasizing the connections between works of art and the contexts in which they are produced.

This course is a foundation of knowledge in African art & the people who produce, use, sell, buy & exhibit such works. Emphasis is placed on theoretical approaches to the study of non-western art, identification of works, styles, artists & broad context in which each piece was conceived & executed. Learn how to examine art & express logical, academic concepts on art forms presented; view art in the context of its culture & history, while expressing critical ideas.

Explores how famous and little-known works of art and arch- itecture contributed to these seminal cultures. Looks closely at art in its religious and socio-political contexts including especially all the contents and decorations of tombs and temples in the Nile river valley. Also examines architecture and art objects from Mesopotamia as reflections of early ideas of personal religion and the city-state.

Explores visual art and architecture as integral to the construction of knowledge and value in these ancient oral cultures. Focuses on Greek and Roman art in its original stylistic, iconographic, religious and socio-political con- texts from the Stone and Bronze Ages through Classical Greece amd Imperial Rome. Also examines how classical revivals have shaped cultures through the ages.
