Topics include the nature of religion and religious experience in the West; orgins and development of each major religion sacred literature, formative myths, symbols and fundamental tenets; forms of religious expression, spirituality and worship; and the relationship to the world as seen in ethical orientations and institutions.

Topics include the nature of religion and religious experience in the East; orgins and development of each major religion; sacred literature, formative myths, symbols and fundamental tenets; forms of religious expressions, spirituality and worship; and the relationship to the world as seen in ethical orientations and institutions.

An introduction to beliefs & practices of Islam in its various manifestations, with add'tl. emphasis on history, politics & gender issues which have both influenced & been influenced by Islam. Focus on Islam at is it lived by people, so that an appreciation of what it is like to live as a Muslim is gained. Also analyze ways Islam is represented in news media & internet, since these have become main sources of information, and misinformation, presented on Islam in the U.S.

This course analyzes Muslim intellectual responses to issues & examines developments in some Muslim countries in the 20th century. The course will provide an overview of the Islamic religion & history, & look at responses of certain influential Muslim intellectuals to issues such as modernism, democracy, secularism, nationalism, science and women's rights. Exploration of ways Islam has developed & influenced politics, & progressive Muslims in the West, as well as other areas are possible.
