    (Cross-listed as Electrical Engineering 100.) An introduction to the design principles of microprocessor-based medical instrumentation and simple biomedical signal analysis. Topics include the origin of bioelectric potentials, characteristics of various biological signals, transducers, A/D converters, analog and digital filters, instrumentation amplifiers, patient isolation, battery powered equipment, and microprocessor design. Each student will be required to complete a paper design of a biomedical instrument. Prerequisites Electrical Engineering 11 and 14.
