Prerequisites: CVC 102 or equivalent. Continuation of Cape Verdean Creole fro students who have had a solid introduction to the Cape Verdean language.& In addition to focusing on grammatical concepts and conversation, new vocabulary will be introduced.& Greater emphasis will be given to writing.& Readings include short stories, newspaper and magazine articles, and poetry.& There will also be a more intense look at topics of relevance to Cape Verdean Creole-speaking communities, including aspects of social and cultural interest. Course constitutes an elective for Portuguese undergraduate minors and majors.& It also fulfills CAS& Humanities distribution requirements and satisfies two General Education requirements (Cultural and Artistic Literacy and Global Awareness.

Prerequisites: FOU 114, 115 This studio course is an introduction to the application of a wide range of traditional illustration materials and techniques via presentations, demonstrations and related assignments employing a cross section of basic research techniques.

Prerequisites: DES 203 Continuation of DES 203, providing the student of illustration with a workshop-oriented forum dedicated to furthering the disciplined approach to draftsmanship& and painting in traditional media for the communication of ideas. Emphasis is on the human form, locomotion, mass, and space.

Prerequisites: FOU 110, 112 An introduction to illustration focusing on drawing and composition as they relate to the special needs of the illustrator; an exploration of the tools, techniques, and surfaces commonly used in illustration, with emphasis on black and white media.

Prerequisites: DES 221 Continuation of DES 221 focusing on color media, with an introduction to concepts for illustrators. The course also includes a review of procedures used in gathering reference material for illustration, and a survey of the history of illustration.

This course emphasizes images and meaning: sequencing images, juxtaposing images, icon development. In addition, students are introduced to communication concepts of audience, form and content, and semiotics. Handcraft is reinforced and vector-based design technology is introduced.

Prerequisites: DES 251
This course emphasizes the power of color: seeing color in action as well as feeling color relatedness. Students will develop and define a general understanding of color by observation and articulation. A thorough exploration and sensitivity to the subtleties of color will be attained by the mixing and painting of gouache. The computer will be used to apply, change, match, and print color.

This course emphasizes the history of existing letterforms, creation of new letterforms, and the relationship between content, typefaces, and the page. Assignments focus on the beauty and structure of text, the consideration of the part and the whole, and the [r]evolution of writing and printing. Page layout software is introduced.
