A study of issues underlying literary and cultural analysis and methodological backgrounds of critical strategies. The first half of the course will be devoted to a review of major contemporary critical schools, e. g., structuralism, post-structuralism and deconstruction, formalism, feminist criticism, new historicism, and post colonial criticism. The second half of the course will be devoted to the analysis of relevant contributions to the field of literary and cultural analysis published in the past five years. Samples from some of the major genres and works of the Portuguese-speaking world& will be& analyzed.

Literary texts, canonical and non-canonical alike, are discussed in a broadly cultural context and from a theoretically informed perspective. Focused written assignments and/or formal oral presentations contribute to the development of individual research projects pursued by the students.

Focused written assignments and/or formal oral presentations contribute to the development of individual research projects pursued by the students.

Individual research project leading to the production of a substantial written work, pursued under the direction of a faculty advisor. This course is continued as POR 661; initially students receive the grade IP, which is changed to be the same as that earned in POR 661.

An introduction to the discipline of political science.& Presents thoughtful reading of a well-defined but narrow body of technical literature upon which a field research experience will be built.

Study of political institutions, state formation, ideologies, and public policies of foreign countries in developed, developing, democratic and non-democratic states.& Comparison with the U.S. and international norms.& Stress laid on the use of the comparative method.
