CHM 201: Organic Chemistry I

This course introduces the chemistry of carbon compounds for students pursuing a career in medicine, chemistry, or modern biology by examining the relationship between organic chemistry and biology. Topics include the chemistry of the carbon atom; the structure, physical properties and reactivity of the important classes of organic compounds; stereochemistry; and IR spectroscopy. Laboratory topics include chromatography, isolation and crystallization, fractional distillation, and basic organic reactions. Three hours lecture, three hours laboratory. Prerequisite: CHM 103. F
