A continuation of French I with emphasis still on speaking and understanding of oral French. The student will progress through basic fundamentals and further acquisition of a basic vocabulary. prerequisite: FRN 101. 3 credits

An introduction to fire science, this course emphasizes the philosophy and history of fire protection while introducing the student to basic concepts of fire science including chemistry of fire, fire loss analysis, and methods and technologies for fire prevention and control. Placement at ENG 101 level strongly advised. 3 credits

A follow-up course to Fire Science I, this course includes building construction, incident command system, and advanced methodologies for fire control. This course includes hands-on applications. Prerequisite: FSC 101. 3 credits

The basic principles of hydraulics are applied to fire service. Topics include the mechanics of fluid flow in hoses, nozzles, pumps and water distribution systems along with measurement methodologies for determining available water supply for fire protection systems/methods. Demonstrations will supplement principles developed in class. 3 credits

This course covers the history and philosophy of fire investigation and detection including inspection techniques, gathering evidence, and developing technical reports. Fundamentals of law/regulations dealing with arson, arson investigation, processing of criminal evidence, criminal procedures, and courtroom presentations are also studied. 3 credits

This course explores the organizational principles and structural components of the fire department. History, types, methods, and principles of fire department organization, both formal and informal, line, and staff are studied. Emphasis is placed on supervisory responsibilities and functions along with administrative problem solving. 3 credits

Fire detection and extinguishing systems of both automatic and manual types are studied including sprinkler and standpipe systems, inert gases, foam and dry chemicals, temperature and smoke response devices, and alarm and signaling systems. Demonstrations will illustrate and supplement classroom lectures. 3 credits

An examination of safety and fire prevention laws, regulations, and codes, including the storage and handling of hazardous materials/substances, building construction and codes, and fireworks, oil burner equipment, gasoline service station, LPG appliance, and life safety codes. Applicable Commonwealth of Massachusetts General Laws, Code of Massachusetts Regulations, Massachusetts Building Codes, National Fire Protection Association codes, and local ordinances will be covered. 3 credits

This course introduces the central concepts of political science and practical politics. It will demonstrate how real-world events are shaped by political ideas and realities of the political world. Placement at ENG 101 level strongly advised. 3 credits

This course deals with the problem of democratic government in the United States including the background of political theory and constitutional development. It studies democracy at various levels in the United States and offers a comparison with other democratic governments. Placement at ENG 101 level strongly advised. 3 credits
