Competitive price advantage and technological advancement in ship construction have lowered transport costs and made ocean transportation an invaluable facilitator of world trade, growth and prosperity. The ever- increasing body of international rules and standards with regard to cargo security, ship safety and environmental protection makes the adoption of a security and safety oriented management culture an essential feature of maritime business. The course objective is to offer students a thorough understanding of international shipping and trade policy issues, bringing together and honing the knowledge gathered in earlier IMB courses. This course covers both business and technical aspects of e-commerce, including web programming. On the business side, the course covers the current e-commerce landscape including various business models, marketing over the internet, security and payment systems and social, legal and political issues affecting e-commerce. On the technical side, after a broad introduction to the evolution of internet-related technology, students are given a thorough grounding in XHTML and to a lesser extend, JavaScript.
