Using a live model as subject, students will explore the abstraction process by developing drawings that include both representational and abstract images derived from the figure. Energy, matter, space and time, manifested by moving models, create a dynamic classroom experience. Throughout the semester we will view and investigate historical examples of figurative abstraction. Relevant books, slides, films, artist's lectures, and exhibitions will be integrated into the course curriculum whenever possible. Traditional and non-traditional wet and dry media, (inks, watersoluble pencils and crayons, graphite sticks, charcoal, paint and more) as well as a variety of techniques may be combined in innovative ways to create mixed media drawings. As your work develops, exploration, personal expression, and conceptual innovation will be encouraged. During each class, a critique occurs of all student work during that session. You will also have an opportunity for individual critiques throughout the course. The critiques emphasize the development of a more critical eye, as well as the verbal skills necessary to discuss the process of figurative abstraction in an articulate manner. Students of all levels and abilities, including beginners and continuing students are welcome. 3 credits (E). Prerequisites: Type: hybrid studio/critique (5 hr Culturally Diverse Content Enrollment:
