Students learn the relationship between the anatomy and physiology of the nervous systems and motor control, balance, coordination, and functional disorders seen across the life span. In this course, students develop the knowledge and skills to perform data collection and documentation procedures expected of the PTA including vital signs, volumetric measurement and girth, sensory testing, patient interview, goniometry, posture, and documentation formats. This course focuses on the preparation of the treatment area, positioning and turning, and the application of proper body mechanics. Students develop knowledge of the physiological effects, indications, contraindications, precautions, and potential adverse reactions, and the skills to safely apply the following physical therapy interventions: range of motion, basic therapeutic exercise, tilt table, massage, intermittent compression, superficial heat, and cryotherapy. Lecture: 3 hours per week. Lab 2 hours per week. 4 credits

In this course, students develop knowledge of the physiological effects, indications, contraindications, precautions, and potential adverse reactions, and the skills necessary to safely apply the following physical therapy interventions: deep heat, ultrasound, mechanical traction, electrotherapeutic and light modalities, and chest physical therapy procedures. Prerequisites: BI 115, PT 102, PT 103, PT 120, PT 121. Co-requisite: BI 116. This course examines the relationship of bony and soft-tissue structures of the trunk and extremities to normal human movement. Students expand and apply data collection procedures expected of the PTA including manual muscle and functional strength testing, bony and soft-tissue palpation, flexibility testing, leg length measurements, and gait. Lecture: 2 hours per week. Lab 2 hours per week. 3 credits

In this course, students develop the ability to safely implement a physical therapy plan of care developed by the physical therapist for a client with a musculoskeletal condition. The use of appropriate external supports and mechanical devices, and skills such as wheelchair positioning and mobility, transfer, and gaittraining, therapeutic exercise, and functional training are included. Lecture: 2 hours per week. Lab 2 hours per week. 3 credits

This course is the first in a two-course series, which presents advanced therapeutic exercise, interventions, and assessments utilized in the treatment of the client with multiple diagnoses and complex medical and neurological conditions. The use of adaptive equipment appropriate to these conditions is included. Lecture: 3 hours per week. Lab: 2 hours per week. 4 credits

Prerequisites: BI 116, PT 104, PT105, PT 122, PT 123, PT 124. This is the first of three six-week clinical experiences.Under the supervision of the clinical instructor, students are expected to safely demonstrate and perform all activities for which they have been academically prepared. This includes communication with client and caregivers, data collection, and application of PT interventions consistent with the PT plan of care. Clinical: 240 hours. 4 credits
