This course introduces students to the study of Art History by focusing on one theme, one artist, or one form of art. Painting, sculpture, architecture, as well as prints and drawings may be considered. Stylistic, cultural, and historic elements are components of the course. F.

This course presents a survey of paintings, sculpture, photography, and architecture of women artists from medieval times to the present. The course investigates the role of the female form in art as created by female artists, the impact of women artists in context of their own time, and issues of art and sexual politics. Artists covered include Sophonisba, Anguiscola, Artemisia Gentileschi, Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrun, Rosa Bonheur, Mary Cassatt, Berthe Morisot, Kathe Kollwitz, Diane Arbus, and Louise Nevelson. Prerequisite: Either ARTH 103, ARTH 104, HIST 203, PHIL 202, or permission of the instructor. As needed.

Through a series of projects, students develop an understanding of the unique properties of printmaking. Original prints have an ancient history that began in eastern Asia in the first few centuries of the last millennium. During the Renaissance, in Western Europe, the art of the print flourished in the studios of artists like Rembrandt. Contemporary printmaking is a unique way to do art and incorporates drawing, painting, digital imagery, photographs, and awareness more in creating art prints. Students will be introduced to different print media to gain of how process influences changes in visual communication Methods will include non-toxic processes such as linocut, monoprint, and pronto plate. Students will create both unique and edition prints.

This course introduces students to the world of art museums, galleries, auction houses, and various other art institutions, through a series of site visits and some involvement in actual gallery work. By exploring venues and the communities they serve, students will address the question, "What is an art museum or gallery, and why is it a part of our society?" Course Fee: $150

This course introduces students to the notion of creating within three-dimensional space. Line, composition, planes, volume, and surfaces are studied from both additive and subtractive perspectives. This course is an introduction to the theories and concepts of design and color with an emphasis on developing an awareness and sensitivity to art as an integral part of one's life and as a way to complement one's aesthetic needs.
