SOC 312X: Sociology of Immigration
4.00 Credits
Lasell University
Unless you are full Native American on both sides, you are here because of immigration -- whether long ago or recently, whether your ancestors came eagerly for a better life, or were brought here against their will. Your family's immigration story depends on when, from where, and how they came to America. In the Sociology of Immigration, we're explore our own immigration stories, discuss readings and watch films about what it means to leave everything behind and go where custom and language are foreign. Once a week, the class will pair up with the recent immigrants from Haiti and Latin America who work at Lasell Village; we'll offer them conversational practice to expand their English-language skills. You'll recieve training, and the conversations will focus on the practical English they need to be successful in their work. We, on the other hand, will move beyond the sociological theory of immigration, and connect what we learn to something real and valuable. The Sociology of Immigration is a 4-credit course with a built-in service-learning linked credit. It will be held on campus, and at Lasell Village. Prerequisite: SOC 101 or PSYC 101
