Explores the history of the African- American freedom struggle from the 1890s to the late 20th century. This course will grapple with the basic inequalities and legal restrictions faced by people of color in the U.S. over a hundred year period. It will also cover the major attempts of whites and blacks to overcome institutional and social race prejudice. Students will study the rise of the NAACP, the formation of the liberal coalition, massive white resistance, the post-1950s civil rights movement, and the lives of a number of men and women who campaigned for and against racial justice.

Directed investigation of an individual research problem pertaining to a particular health field. The student, in consultation with the Health Science director, develops an outline of the project including a realistic timetable for completion of the project. The project may be carried out during either semester, or during the summer, with approval of the director. The project may be completed at other locations (i.e., a physical therapy clinic) under appropriate supervision. A formal written report must be turned in by the final day of classes for the course credit.
