    This course is designed to refine and expand upon the techniques and tools students have acquired in previous studies of the craft of acting, either through Acting I and Acting II, other comparable training experiences, or through real world experience working in the local theater community. This course will give students a thorough grounding in such advanced Stanislavski acting techniques as emotional recall, sense memory, visualization, playing subtext, and relationship communication. Additionally, students will utilize repetition exercises as conceived and developed by Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse. Prerequisite: THR103 or THR203 / 3 credits.

    This course explores the many facets that make up the experience of theater. Students probe questions like: what is the essence of theater, who are the artists that create what one sees on stage, what are the types of drama, the trends and movements since the Ancient Greeks, and how are plays reflective of playwrights' cultures? Students will broaden their knowledge and experience of what constitutes the art of theater through reading, class discussion, lecture, staged readings, and viewing live and video performances. Prerequisite: None / 3 credits. Offered in the Fall.

    Consideration of the life cycle of a play from the page to the stage. Students will read several plays, each to be explored from the viewpoint of the director, the various designers and other collaborating artists. Prerequisite: None; THR101 recommended / 3 credits. Offered in the Spring.

    This course seeks to broaden the student-actor’s abilities in movement, control, poise, and understanding, and to expand his/her expressiveness, body awareness, and sensitivity to the senses and emotions. Students will learn to build their confidence when performing before an audience. Prerequisite: None / 3 credits. Offered in the Fall, Spring, and Summer.

    This course offers the opportunity to work in and gain knowledge of all phases of the creation of live theater: everything from developing a character to building a set. By participating in a variety of production areas, the student will begin to learn the complexities of rehearsing and producing a play for the general public. Although all students will be required to work on the technical crews in set building, lighting, or costuming for a modest number of hours, the focus of this course is on students serving as actors or stage managers in the production that has been chosen for that semester. Variable contact hours. Prerequisite: None / 1, 2, or 3 credits. May be repeated for credit; 6 credit maximum. Offered in the Fall and Spring.

    Strategies for those who work with children in the home, school, or community to incorporate role playing games, movement exercises, storytelling and other theater arts into their repertoire of skills to bring into the education field. Prerequisite: None / 3 credits.

    A practical, hands-on approach to designing and constructing various scenic elements for the stage including sets, costumes, props, and lighting. Included are reading, lecture, discussion and application of skills and knowledge through selected student projects and stagecraft activities. (2 class hours / 3 studio hours) Prerequisite: None; THR102 recommended / 3 credits. Offered in the Fall.

    Theory and practice of technical theater with emphasis on the principles of planning, construction, rigging of scenery, hanging and circuiting of lighting instruments, and operation of sound systems. Prerequisite: None. 1, 2, or 3 credits. May be repeated once for credit; 6 credit maximum. Offered in the Fall and Spring.

    This course develops the intermediate student through intensive, process-oriented work on scripted material from classical sources. Students will be required to rehearse and perform together before their classmates to develop critical interpretive skills from both actor and audience perspectives. Classes will include individual coaching, drilling of basic technical skills in voice and movement, theater games, exercises in character development and analysis, and constructive group critique discussions. (15 lecture hours / 60 lab hours) Prerequisite: THR103 / 3 credits. Offered in the Spring.

    This studio course will combine the introduction of basic directing theory and the application of technique to assigned scenes. Students will be expected to have some previous theater experience on stage or behind the scenes. Students will learn to interpret scripts for performance, prepare for auditions, manage rehearsals, and refine actors work for public presentation. Students will direct two projects: a staged reading and a memorized two-person scene in cooperation with actors from college acting classes. Prerequisite: THR103 / 3 credits.
