    An online introduction to understanding and interpreting the world around you for the purpose of creating art work. Recognizing and identifying elements of visual language like Line, Shape, Color, Texture, and Tone will lead to applying these elements in the creation of art and design work. Critically evaluating art work and the work of other artists and designers will help nurture confidence in the use of visual language and provide a basis for exploring all forms of visual expression, including drawing, painting, life drawing, sculpture, design, graphic art, website design and printmaking. Prerequisite: None / 1 credit. Offered in the Fall, Spring, and Summer.

Prerequisite: ENL050 or satisfactory basic skills assessment score / 3 credits.

Prerequisite: ENL050 or satisfactory basic skills assessment score / 3 credits.

    Learn the basics of fabric and textile manipulation and applying fibers and textiles to create art. Sewing machine maintenance explained. Color, design, composition, and texture are used to create project designs. Translate line drawings into patterns. Tools and templates specific to fabric are shown. Self-expression is required. Individual and group projects constructed. (4 studio hours plus 2 additional hours arranged) Prerequisite: None / 3 credits.

    This course is an introduction to the elements of visual language (line, shape, tone, texture, color, light, volume, negative space) in 3D form. Through exploring a range of materials to achieve 3D designs, techniques and principles introduced in ART101 are applied. Students solve 3D design problems by creating modeled and constructed forms both in relief and free-standing form. Historical references are made to support the development and understanding of the work. This course can inspire students to explore their creative expression in sculpture. (4 class hours plus 2 additional studio hours arranged) Corequisite: ART101 / 3 credits; may be repeated once for credit.

    This course critically investigates and explores graphic design and visual communication history, materials, techniques and styles, major movements and significant artists and designers. This course requires students to participate in lecture and presentation, and prepare writing and studio projects. Students build a conceptual and visual understanding of vocabulary, applying critical thinking and visual skills in an evaluation of the historical context and the importance of historical reference in graphic design work. Prerequisite: None / 3 credits.

    This course offers a travel experience for students interested in improving their drawing and writing skills and exploring Scotland's many places of stunning historical and natural beauty. Students will appreciate the close relationship between drawing and writing through sharing their visual and literary expressions. Ways of seeing through writing and drawing will be examined and the use of language both visual and literal will be applied and understood through exploring Scotland - the land, culture and people. Prerequisite: None / 1 credit.
