A remedial course covering the rudiments of music theory in addition to all material covered in MU115, designed to prepare students to enter MU116 in the spring semester. Students who fail a Music Theory placement examination administered at matriculation will be automatically enrolled in this course. 3 hours weekly; 2 credits

Sight-singing and solfège in treble and bass clefs, simple rhythmic and melodic dictation, aural recognition of intervals, scales, and chords. Required of all music performance and composition majors. One or both of these courses may be waived based on an Ear Training placement examination administered at matriculation. 2.5 hours weekly; 2 credits

The study of species counterpoint, triads and inversions, principles of chord progression, non-harmonic tones, harmonic rhythm, seventh chords and their inversions, modulation and secondary dominants; introduction to harmonic analysis, and the harmonization of bass lines and melodies. Required of all music performance and composition majors. Introductory survey of diction and enunciation in English, Italian, German and French rooted in intensive study of the International Phonetic Alphabet. Required of first year Vocal Performance majors. 2 hours weekly; 1 credit

A remedial course covering the basics of keyboard geography, scales, arpeggios, simple chord construction, and intervals, aimed at students with little or no prior keyboard experience. 2 hours weekly; 1 credits

A continuation of MU161 incorporating simple harmonization, sight reading, simple figured bass, and rudimentary piano literature.. 1 hour weekly; 1 credit

Applied keyboard skills for piano majors with emphasis on harmonization (diatonic and chromatic functions), transposition, and traditional figured bass realization. Styles of harmonization extend from traditional accompaniment patterns to an introduction of contemporary 7th and 9th chords and lead sheet harmonization. 2 hours weekly; 2 credits

An intensive and personally fitted overview of piano technique (scales, arpeggios, double notes, touches, etc.), score-reading and sight-reading techniques. 1 hour weekly; 1 credit

The fundamentals of manuscript preparation of scores and parts, and contemporrary notation. After initial work on hand copying students are provided with a thorough training in Finale computer notation software Required of all composition majors and a useful elective for performance majors. 1 hour weekly; 1 credit
