Introduces the language and culture of Spanish-speaking countries and covers the fundamentals of grammar and basic vocabulary. Course work is distributed among grammar presentation, reading, conversation, drill and language laboratory. Aims to provide an essential foundation for those students who require a command of Spanish for practical purposes, and to present contemporary issues in the Hispanic world through the use of audiovisual materials and outside readings. Cultural readings center on Italy today. Italian language films and guided conversational practice. I

    Introduces modern spoken Japanese. Focuses on the basic sentence patterns and essential vocabulary for communicating in standard spoken Japanese. Emphasis is very strongly placed on actively speaking in and listening to the language. Useful expressions and terms are included as well as examples of proper behavior in everyday situations (e.g., greeting people, getting acquainted). The hiragana and katakana writing systems are introduced. I

Concentrates on conversational practice, pronunciation and grammar in order to advance basic language competence in contemporary Japanese. Provides practice in reading the hiragana writing system and introduces 91 kanji ( Chinese) characters. Emphasis is on important aspects of current Japanese culture and civilization. I

The focus is on modern Mandarin Chinese (as spoken and written in mainland China) for daily communication. Special attention is given to Chinese phonetics and tones, on writing using phonetic transcriptions (Pin Yin) and on introducing students to aspects of life in modern China. I

The focus continues to be on spoken Mandarin Chinese for daily communication, with an expanded base of vocabulary and cultural situations.
