This is the first course in a four-course sequence designed to develop cultural literacy about the complex heritage of western civilization. Using material from several disciplines, this course examines texts and ideas which provide information about the richness and diversity of western culture. It addresses themes of the natural world, the individual, spirituality, and the arts, themes which will continue throughout the sequence. Team taught, the course is based on the lecture/discussion format and integrates formal and informal writing throughout the semester. CR. 3

The second course of the four-course sequence devoted to fostering cultural literacy. In this course, continuing the themes of the natural world, spirituality, and the arts, students will read and discuss texts and other materials which examine the individual's relation to the communities which provide the foundation of western culture. This course relies heavily on class discussion and integrates formal and informal writing. Prerequisite: INT101 or permission of instructor. CR. 3

In the interest of achieving cultural literacy in the science and math arenas, the growth of thought in these disciplines will be examined in a historical context. Students will develop an understanding of these areas as aspects of the human experience, giving them a cultural basis for comprehending the abstract concepts of science and mathematics in the content courses. Prerequisite: BIO110. CR. 3

Introduction to a wide variety of art forms, to raise aesthetic issues about each, to provide a beginning technical vocabulary, and to acquaint students with certain practitioners of each art. Topics may include sculpture, architecture, dance, pottery, stained glass, mosaics, weaving, photography, painting, the symphonic orchestra, opera and jazz. Prerequisite: ENG101. CR. 3

Introduces basic ecological principles and examines changes in the environment and their implications for the future of the planet and the race. Includes literature related to nature and people's relationship to nature, and occasional student essays. Prerequisite: ENG101 (three credit hours of science and three credit hours of English). CR. 6

The third of the four-course sequence devoted to fostering cultural literacy. This course emphasizes the diverse opportunities of western culture, enriched by issues of migration and ethic identity. The format of the course integrates personal and expository writing, along with discussion and lectures. Prerequisite: INT101, INT102, or permission of the instructor. CR. 3

In this capstone course students focus on the ways human beings in a given community or society know and learn. Continuing to deal with the same themes, the last semester provides the context for an enlarged, retrospective understanding of the insights and knowledge gained in previous semesters. Students' understanding will culminate in the completion of an interdisciplinary project which addresses one of the sequences themes. The first three semesters of the sequence will build toward this project which may be collaborative. Prerequisite(s): INT101, INT102, INT203, or permission of instructor. CR. 3
