This course will familiarize undergraduates with the variety of qualitative research methods used by social scientists, in the business world, in government, and among educators. Students will apply the methods to a series of research projects, and learn the reciprocal influence between theory and research design. Individual research projects will directly apply these methods throughout the semester. The methods include focus group interviews, individual interviews, unobtrusive observation methods, ethnographic field research, varieties of participant and non-participant observation, case studies, oral histories, and sociometry. Ethical issues bearing on research procedures and research design tasks are also course topics. Prerequisites: Six hours of sociology and junior standing.

Death as a source of insight and theories concerning the relationship of society to the individual. Functionalists and social-psychological perspectives on death in the work of Durkheim,Malinowski, Parsons, Marcuse and Kubler-Ross. Suicide, games and festivals, ecstatic movements, memorials and contact with the dead in American society. Prerequisite: 1010 or consent of instructor.
