This course is designed to allow the student the opportunity to learn basic cardiac anatomy & physiology, assess a patient for cardiac disease, recognize rhythm disturbances that place a patient at risk, & obtain the skills necessary to evaluate cardiac monitoring for the purpose of identification of cardiac dysrhythmias. The course consists of lectures, films & practice cardiac monitor strips. Approximately 60 percent of class time is dedicated to teaching dysrhythmia recognition & practice.

This course is designed to provide the nurse with a strong foundation of intravenous fluid therapy uses, techniques & administration. The participant will learn the anatomy & physiology of the intravenous fluid therapy sites, structure of the circulatory system, the relationship between intravenous fluid therapy adminstration and the body's homeostatic and regulatory functions, including clinical manifestations of fluid and electrolytr imbalance and cellular physiology. Participants will learnvarious types of equipment used in IV fluid administration, criteria of the use of each piece of equipment and a means of trouble--shooting for malfunctions. The principles of compatibility and incompatibility of drugs and solutions will be discussed as well as the nursing management of special IV fluid therapy.administration systems. Nursing managementof the patient receiving IV drug therapy, signs and symptoms of local and systemic complications in the delivery of fluids and medication dosage will be taught. Participants will learn information regarding the Kansas Nurse Practice Act regulations. Registered nurses will also benefit from this course by strengthening their performance skills in IV therapy. Contact hours for continuing nursing education are also available for this class.
