Fundamental class designed for students with a limited background in music reading. Terminology, staff, scales, use of key signatures, intervals, rhythm, notation, simple melodies & transposition are covered.

Study of notation of pitch and rhythm. Basic elements of scale, key, mode and interval stressed. Extensive work with harmonic aspects of triad, figured bass and types of cadences. Harmonic motion, rhythm and variants in minor. Presentation of the six-four chord: cadential, passing, pedal, arpeggiated. Components of musical form, shape and texture (monophonic, polyphonicandhomophonic). Analysis and development of such melodic units as contour, figure, motive, phrase, period, etc. Presentation and manipulation of non-chord tones. First steps in part writing including harmony and voice leading of the chorale: doubling, spacing, counterpoint and chord relationships.

Diverse uses of all cords studied thus far as related to rfunctional tonality. Introduction of diatonic seventh cords, common dominant functions, inversions and interchangeability of same. Modulations tp closely relatedf keys via pivot cord, tonal shift and chromatic tones. Introduction to binary, rounded binary and ternary forns. Also the tonicization/modulation functions of secondaries. Introduction to Neapolitan and augmented sixth chords in addition to other harmonic developments of the Classical period. Also includes such 19th century harmonic developments as enharmonic functions, change of mode, mode mixtures, modal borrowing, chromatic third relationships and modulations.

One-part diatonic exercises in step-wise melodies using G and F clefs in all major keys, progressing to two-part diatonicexercisesinstep-wisemelodies- reiterating all keys to B and D-flat.

One- & two-part exercises in step-wise melodies using all keys accompanied by graded presentation of chromatic tones. The minor mode is introduced. Incidental & extended modulations are explored, alongwithsyncopatedrhythms. Systematictreatment of intervals.
