This course is an integrated overview of nursing health care as related to medical microbiology. The field of bacteriology will be emphasized concerning microscopy, clinical laboratory tests, associating disease with bacterial scientific names, and control of microbial growth. Antibiotic control of bacteria will be discussed in addition to the general characteristics of bacterial population growth requirements. A 1.5 hr. lab/week component is included with this course.

This course is designed for students who have had no typing or those who wish to improve skills. Emphasis is on familiarity with the basic parts of the hardware and learning the keyboard, including number row keys and basic document formatting. This course utilizes a comprehensive individualized instructional approach. Required for office technology majors. (Offered fall semester: 1-3 cr. hr.; spring semester: 1 cr. hr.)

This course continues to emphasize the importance of developing speed and accuracy while applying skills to the production of various letters, memos, tables, reports and forms. These include basic grammar, word division, paragraphing, punctuation, formatting, capitalization and number style and editing, with special emphasis placed on spelling and proofreading. This course covers specific concepts of records administration combined with basic management principles. It includes the criteria by which records are created, classified, stored, retrieved, transferred, archived or disposed. Procedures for the operation and control of storage systems are explained. Principles for the selection of records personnel, equipment and supplies are included. (Offered spring semester)

Medical Office Procedures is a skills-based course including lecture and applications. This class will allow students to build skills while developing a solid medical office foundation. Topics covered will include general office procedures, medical office procedures, insurance billing with current medical office software, a medical office program and professional development. This course emphasizes the specialized skills and abilities students need to perform at both the operational and the managerial levels in today's office. Topics covered include telephone dynamics, organizational structures, time management, meetings and travel arrangements, communication services, postal services, reference materials, supplies, human relations, supervisory and administrative responsibilities, current technologies and the resume and job interview. This course is a hands-on application of basic formatting of documents on the personal computers using word processing software. Areas covered include creating, editing, formatting, and other features used in the legal office. Legal terminology and legal documents are covered. (Offered fall semester)

Prerequisite: CO176 (Introduction to Computer Concepts and Applications). Advanced Word processing is designed to give students advanced training in suite software packages with emphasis in word processing. Students will complete and solve business problems using Microsoft Word. A review of basic software features will be presented with a flow into the more advanced features. Students will complete the course by participating in at least one Microsoft Office Specialist Certification Exam TM. (Offered fall semester)
