The focus is on the individual as it relates to holistic needs or problems across the life span. The course introduces the assessment of functional health patterns that become the focus of clinical practicums in subsequent courses. Experiences in the campus laboratory and health care facilities provide an opportunity to use the nursing process to develop nursing communication and clinical skills. Prerequisite: Admission to the program.

This course builds on knowledge and skills acquired in NALS I. Instruction focuses on assessment of nursing needs and the implementation of nursing care of individuals across the life span with commonly occuring health problems that are associated with each of the functional health patterns. Experiences in the campus lab or health care facilities provide the students with an opportunity to become more proficient in using the nursing process and performing nursing skills. During the last five weeks of the course, the focus is directed toward a theory of organization for administering nursing care to groups of clients in a health care facility. The ethical and legal responsibilities of the practical nurse as an individual and as a member of the health care team are explored. Clinical learning assignments are designated to provide students opportunity to use the nursing process as a basis for providing care to groups of clients in a health care setting. Prerequisite: Completion of NALS I or its equivalent.

This course presents health care needs relative to specific functional health patterns of the individual. The introductory phase of this course provides learning experiences to initiate the transition of the student from the practical nursing role and philosophy to concepts inherent in the practice and philosophy of the associate degree nurse. Emphasis is placed on therapeutic communication and the holistic needs of the individual across the life span. Using the nursing process, the student learns to intervene therapeutically with and on behalf of clients, families and significant others, having well defined acute health needs. In addition to the campus laboratory, a variety of structured clinical settings are used to provide correlated learning experiences. Legal aspects, ethical issues and dimensions of contemporary nursing are integrated. Legal aspects, ethical issues and dimensions of contemporary nursing are integrated throughout the course. Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of NALS II or its equivalent and admission to the second level.

Course content is designed to focus on major alterations in functional health patterns. Non-clinical nursing content directs the student to consider contemporary legislative issues which have an impact on nursing and the health care delivery system. Consideration of career opportunities and responsibilities for the technical nurse are explored. Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of NALS IV or its equivalent.
