Examination of gender and minority issues through a number of Japanese comic stories, or manga, translated into English. Analysis of the selected comic stories is based on a trove of scholarly writings about protagonists' gender roles as well as Japan's subcultures representing marginalized groups of society. Discussion topics include the influences of manga on the creation of 'ideal' men and women and its contribution to the awareness of minorities in Japan from 1960's to the present. Class work does not require the ability to read original Japanese texts. (Same as JPNS 382.)

The course introduces the performance traditions in Japan, ranging from rituals to theatre. Through readings and visual materials, students will observe the historical development of Japanese theatre and other performing arts forms, from the ancient period to the pre-modern noh and kibuki and then to modern theatre after Japan's Westernization. At the same time students examine such art forms from the anthropological and sociological perspectives and the unique aspects of Japanese theatre such as fusion of daily behavior, cultural appropriation, transmission of skills and intercultural elements. (Same as DRAM 383 and JPNS 383).
