Prerequisite: SOCI 1101 or consent of instructor Studies how societal practices and organization produce varying types of ecological degradation. Analyzes various forms of environmental activism. Analyzes selected cases and issues as well as critically examines and compares various sociological viewpoints. Considers global problems and everyday situations with a focus on modernity as risk society. Same as SOCI 4803.

Prerequisite: CHEM 3310K This course is an introduction to the practice of modern environmental chemistry. Topics include pollutants in water, soil, and the atmosphere; equilibria in aqueous systems; experimental methods in environmental analyses; toxicological chemistry; and current environmental problems. The laboratory will consist of EPA-approved methods of analyses. Same as CHEM 4920.

Prerequisite: consent of instructor and student's environmental studies advisor. In-depth, individualized research on a specifi c topic in environmental studies. May be repeated for a maximum of 6 hours.

Students will consider the primary visual, aural, and narrative conventions by which motion pictures create and comment upon signifi cant social experience. Students will watch a wide range of fi lms from a variety of countries and historical moments in fi lm history. Students will have the chance to explore issues such as framing, photographic space, fi lm shot, editing, sound, genre, narrative form, acting style, and lighting in the context of wider discussions of the weekly fi lms. This is an introductory course, and assumes no prior knowledge of fi lm. Students will be evaluated primarily on the basis of weekly postings, a shot-by-shot analysis, and exams. Weekly screenings will be offered.

Prerequisite: ENGL 1101 and 1102 An exploration in major developments in fi lm history, theory, and criticism. Students will become familiar with several different fi lm movements in the development of the art form and will be introduced to basic ideas in fi lm theory. Through a variety of fi lm movements and historical periods, students will develop an understanding of the cultural, industrial, and political contexts for some of the most signifi cant debates about fi lm. Specifi c topics covered will include Russian formalism, the history of classical Hollywood cinema, the French New Wave, recent global cinemas, as well as alternatives to Hollywood in the United States. Students will be evaluated on the basis of weekly postings, participation in discussion, essay exams, and formal writing opportunities.
