    This course is designed to refresh preliminary knowledge for students that have been out of school for several years, or others desiring a brief review of basic knowledge of biology and chemistry. Emphasis will be placed on major themes of anatomy and physiology, chemical basis of life, cells, cellular metabolism, tissues and skin.

    Prerequisites: Satisfactory academic standing in college level courses. Asurvey of biology incorporating the modern concepts in the cellular biology of plants and animals. Topics include, but are not limited to, cellular structure, physiology, reproduction, genetics and development. Lecture, discussion and laboratory settings provide the student with a maximum opportunity for learning. 3 hours lecture; 3 hours laboratory. BIO311 (4 hours) Conservation Ecology Prerequisite: BIOor GLY100-200 level class. This course integrates lecture and field observations to bring the regional ecological and conservation issue together. Field trips to natural, disturbed and threatened areas will show the role of man in the degradation and restoration of the environment. 3 hours lecture, 3 hours laboratory. BIO261-262 (4 hours) Human Anatomy and Physiology I & II Prerequisite: Good academic standing in college level courses; Enrollment in BIO262 depends upon successful completion of BIO261. Asurvey of human anatomy and physiology sequence designed to meet the needs of the allied health student. Anatomy, physiology and biochemistry are taught concurrently to enable the student to grasp the interrelated complexities of all three areas. Laboratory features dissection of the cat and other specimens as required, plus a broad sampling of physiological principles using modern laboratory equipment. 3 hours lecture, 3 hours laboratory per week.

    Prerequisite: BIO261 or permission of instructor. Astudy of the principles of microbiology including morphology, reproduction, epidemiology, culture identification, and related metabolic considerations. Laboratory stresses principles of transmission and sterile technique, identification and specific nutritional needs, and selected organisms. 3 hours lecture, 3 hours laboratory.

    Prerequisites: BIO101, ZOO201 or permission of instructor. Basic ecological principles and concepts coordinated with field study of plant and animal communities. The local and global aspects of ecology will be included. Field studies will be conducted as part of the laboratory. 3 hours lecture, 3 hours laboratory.

    Prerequisite: BIO101. Introduction to microbiology with emphasis on bacteriology, virology and immunology. Surveys the field of microbiology and related techniques with special attention given to host-pathogen relationships and diagnostics. Laboratory exercises are correlated with lecture topics. 3 hours lecture, 4 hours laboratory.
  • 4.00 Credits

    Prerequisite: Declared biology major or permission of instructor. Independent readings from selected literature in genetics, evolution, ecology or other areas of biology. This course will be an independent study under the supervision of a member of the biology faculty. Written reports and discussion of the assigned reading will be required. This course will not replace a required science sequence but may be used for science elective in some programs of study. 1 hour. May be repeated up to 4 hours.
