Prerequisites: PSY 101 Co-requisites: SUR 101, SUR 108 Introduces a complex diversity of surgical patients. Topics include: physiological diversities and needs, special patient needs, preoperative routine, intraoperative patient care, surgical emergencies, documentation and assessment skills, postoperative patient care, and care of the caregiver.

Prerequisites: SUR 101, SUR 108, and PSY 101 (diploma), or PSY 191 (degree) Co-requisites: SUR 102, SUR 109 Introduces the fundamentals of intraoperative pharmacology, and emphasizes concepts of anesthesia administration. Topics include: weights and measurements, drug conversions, interpretation of drug orders, legal aspects of drug administration, intraoperative pharmacologic agents, and anesthesia fundamentals.

Prerequisites: Program admission, AHS 101 and SUR 101 (taken no longer than 6 months prior to enrollment in SUR 112) Prerequisite/Co-requisite: SUR 102 Orients students to the clinical environment and provides experience with basic skills necessary to the surgical technologist. Topics include: scrubbing; gowning; gloving; and draping; assistance with patient care; processing of instruments and supplies; maintenance of a sterile field; basic instrumentation; and environmental sanitation.

Prerequisite: Program admission Provides an overview of the operating room environment and develops concepts, principles and skills necessary to care for surgical patients and to participate on a surgical team. Topics include: legal and ethical issues; perioperative patient care; physical facilities; surgical asepsis; instrumentation and equipment; sterilization and disinfection; and specific procedures.

Prerequisite: SUR 201 Presents an eclectic overview of advanced operating room techniques, management, and other issues pertinent to perioperative nurses.

Prerequisites: SUR 102, SUR 109, SUR 110, SUR 112 Co-requisite: SUR 213 Continues introduction to surgical procedures, incisions, wound closure, operative pathology, and common complications as applied to general and specialty surgery. Topics include: general surgery and special techniques, obstetrical and gynecological surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, genitourinary surgery, head and neck surgery, and plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Prerequisites: SUR 203, SUR 213 Co-requisite: SUR 214 Continues development of student knowledge and skills applicable to specialty surgery areas. Topics include: ophthalmic surgery, orthopedic surgery, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, cardiovascular surgery, and neurosurgery.

Prerequisite: SUR 201 Orients the student to the clinical environment and provides experience with skills necessary to the perioperative nurse. Places emphasis on patient care, team participation, technical skills, leadership, and management. Provides opportunity for the student to observe and participate in surgical procedures as a scrubbed and circulating member of the team.

Prerequisites: SUR 102, SUR 109, SUR 110, SUR 112 Co-requisite: SUR 203 Emphasis is placed on routine procedures for general and specialty surgery. Students continue to demonstrate increased knowledge and advanced participation through the clinical experience. Topics include: aseptic technique, case preparation, application of surgical anatomy, surgical team employability skills, and demonstration of employability skills.

Prerequisites: SUR 203, SUR 204, SUR 213 Provides opportunity for students to complete all required Surgical Technology procedures through active participation in surgery in the clinical setting. Topics include: primary scrub on specialty surgical procedures; participation as a surgical team conducting ophthalmic, orthopedic, thoracic, vascular, cardiovascular, and neurosurgery procedures; independent case preparation and implementation of intraoperative skills; and demonstration of employability skills.
