Reading 095E is an entry-level course of a two-course sequence intended for ESL students who score below the designated level on the placement exam. A wide range of materials, some especially designed for ESL students, are used to improve reading skills in the areas of vocabulary development, study skills, and literal and inferential comprehension. Also focused on are problems difficult for ESL students like comprehending the meaning of grammatical structures, idiomatic English, and common thought patterns of paragraphs. No prerequistion.

Also focused on are problems difficult for ESL students like idiomatic English, stylistic techniques, and structural patterns within longer texts. Students examine assumptions and thinking that underlie passages and consider cultural context as part of meaning.

Emphasis is placed on dictionary usage, vocabulary in context, study skills, and literal and inferential comprehension. This course introduces the study of religion as a personal, cultural and cross-cultural phenomenon. Attention is given to the relationship between religious writings and religious beliefs, to the development of religious traditions, and to the impact of religious ideas on personal and social values in the United States. Prerequisites: Exit or exemption from Learning Support Reading and English.
