PSC 225: International Human Rights
4.00 Credits
The University of Tampa
This course is designed to introduce students to the role of politics in human rights and vice-versa by focusing on the international human rights regime developed since the end of World War 2. We will learn about the causes and consequences of the institutions that undergird the regime including norms, rules, and laws. We will traverse four broad themes throughout the semester. First, we will examine the conceptual and historical origins of the international human rights regime and why states violate human rights despite the regime. Second, we will focus on the different international institutions and how state foreign policy is affected by these institutions. Third, we will examine the domestic institutions that make the international regime more effective in protecting human rights. Lastly, we will focus on three relevant rights abuses making headlines - genocide, refugees, and human trafficking. Reading and thoughtful discussion throughout the semester will shine light on theoretical arguments for how to reduce human rights abuse in the world and the empirical evidence supporting those arguments. Throughout the semester, students will be introduced to case studies of particular atrocities to gain understanding of how our theoretical and empirical knowledge plays out in the real world.
