This course presents a conceptual introduction to newer areas of physics. Topics will include a brief and non-mathematical overview of the following broad topics: elementary relativity and quantum theory, the physics underlying the evolution of stars including fusion, fission, black holes, neutron stars, red giants, white dwarfs, and quasars, a glimpse into theories of the origin of the universe (big bang, steady-state models) and current theories relevant to cosmology such as string theory.
