    The clinical course focuses on basic medical practice. The student is exposed to common medical problems encountered on in-patient and out-patient medical services. Emphasis is placed on the history and physical examination and the process required in the proper work-up and management of the patient. Patient care experience in the various subdivisions of internal medicine including oncology, hematology, neurology, nephrology, gastroenterology, rheumatology, pulmonology, cardiology, and infectious diseases may be required.     During the clinical course the student will be exposed to a variety of clinical problems routinely seen on the surgical service. Emphases will be placed on preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative management of the patient.     This clinical course in an emergency care setting will provide opportunities for the student to manage the acutely ill and traumatized patient. The student will learn to perform history and physical examination on the acutely ill patient with emphasis being placed on the management and support measures necessary in situations which are life threatening.
