This course will explore the various ways contemporary African American Poets write about the historical Black subject in their poetry. Students will read full-length poetry collections documenting the lives of historical figures like Phillis Wheatley, Black soldiers in the Civil War, Leadbelly, Emmett Till, and Medgar Evers. We will discuss the historical contexts for these figures and the various approaches poets use to make their lives engaging for modern audiences.
