Course examines the relationship between archives and the theory and practice of public history. The course will survey the best practices for the care and preservation of archival materials, as well as the application of archival techniques to the care and preservation of electronic records. Special attention will be paid to the ways that public historians and archivists can use archival materials, online archival resources, and public archival programs to help the public learn about the past and appreciate the value of historical records. Students enrolled in the class will be required to visit archival institutions and to undertake hands-on projects with archival materials. This course is available for graduate credit.
